Totems, or markers, are stationary items that dictate what a certain area is designated as, as well as what furnishings that area needs to be considered complete. Totems are typically some kind of signboard or mailbox, with the exception of the Festival Grounds totem, which is an archway, or the Town Square totem, which is a fountain [ ? ] .
A totem's requirements, its bounding area, and the totem's name can be checked at any time by interacting with the totem. Unmet requirements are listed in white text and state the amount of items missing for that requirement, while met requirements are listed in light blue text.
All totems can be moved, and the areas of most totems, such as the totems for houses, can overlap each other. However, the areas for the Festival Grounds and the Town Square cannot overlap.
Totem basics[]
Areas[]
Each totem has a certain area in which required items must be placed. The bounding box of this area is visualized by flying yellow particles which are shown when the player either turns its option on from the totem menu (shown by interacting with the totem) or when the player interacts with a protected area (such as attempting to pick flowers from or place an object in a protected area).
The bounding box's visibility can be turned on from the totem interface so that the player can clearly see where the box is while working on the building.
Area protection[]
Totems that were placed at world creation (such as the General Store, Building Store, and Town Hall totems) must first be interacted with to turn off editing protection for the area. After protection is turned off, that area can be altered. Area protection can be turned back on after the player is done, if desired.
To build new places or upgrade certain buildings as part of quests, make sure the area's protection is turned off, then place the required items in the yellow bounding box (can be turned on from totem so totem's bounding area is always visible).
Proximity to town[]
Certain totems must be placed within a certain distance of the town. In the tables in the Totems section below, the In Town column states whether that totem must be placed in town or not. If so, then the totem must be built near town in order to function correctly (ex. villager moving in to their new house). If not, then the totem can be placed anywhere on the island or in the ocean beyond the beach and the resulting area will still function correctly.
Item requirements[]
As with any building or location that the player is requested to build, the player is free to design the house as they desire, so long as it fits the totem's requirements. Some totem requirements are a piece of furniture from a general category (such as chairs), while other requirements are a specific item, such as the Patisserie Display and Patisserie Oven needed for the Patisserie.
Roof[]
All buildings, such as houses for villagers and buildings around town, require a roof.
Any tile can count as a roof, so long as that tile is attached to a wall (made of any tile) that is at least three blocks high and overhangs air. If the entire base row of a wall is destroyed, all blocks above that row will break and the structure will come tumbling down.
Because tree leaves are tiles, certain trees can immediately be recognized as a "building" with a "roof" upon placing a totem down near them, so long as they are not a pine tree (the tall, thin trees).
Villager totems[]
Most villagers are tied to a totem, but some characters are merely visitors and arrive into town via the Airship Landing.
The Airship Landing must have all of its Tier 0 (base) requirements met in order to function. If the Airship Landing is not functional, then certain characters will no longer be able to arrive in town, such as the mailmen needed to complete Postage and Handling.
Starting villagers[]
Each Staxel world will always spawn with Farm Fan, Maximilian, Aliza, Leif, Rowan, and the four Traveling Merchants. Four basic villagers will also spawn, though which of the villagers will spawn will depend on the world's seed.
The starting villagers will always spawn the building or structure that they live in, with the exception of Farm Fan and Lief, who stay at the Tavern. [ ? ]
Villagers that do not have a house[]
Certain villagers have houses, though not all do.
- Farm Fan had been squatting in the player's farm prior to the player's arrival; once the player arrives, she starts staying at the Tavern instead.
- Leif does not have a home on the island and instead spends most of his time in the General Store, which he has been watching over for a friend.
- The Murmur Merchants can always be found next to their carts and do not have houses of their own.
Villagers moving in[]
The villagers that can be a starting villager or move into the village include Cecile, Emilia, Jamie, Oscar, Riah, and Rosemary. Maximilian will occasionally hand the player the mailbox totem of one of the missing starter villagers.
Certain villagers that can live in town can only be spawned upon fulfilling certain requirements.
- Vorlen can only spawn after Day 16 (Year 1, Spring 16).
- Cirahna can only spawn if the Museum exists and it is past Day 42 (Year 1, Summer 12).
- Morel will only spawn after Cirahna has met the player.
Villagers will move into their new house shortly after all of their Tier 0 totem requirements are met.
Villagers moving out[]
If the totem is the mailbox for a house and the requirements were previously met but are not currently met, the occupant of that house will become unhappy. If the requirements continue to not be met for a few in-game days, then that villager will move out of town until their totem's requirements are met again.
Because Leif does not have a house, he will only move out if the General Store's base requirements are met.
Upgrading tiers[]
Certain totems that have multiple tiers. The Tier 0 level is the base requirement for the structure or area to function correctly. Certain structures may spawn with multiple tiers already met, while some totems may require the player to increase their friendship with the owner of that area in order to be able to upgrade the area (ex. increase their relationship with Leif to upgrade the General Store).
Remodeling existing buildings[]
Moving items or blocks within the store around, or even completely remodeling the store, is allowed at any time, even without a remodeling quest (such as Postage and Handling) active, so long as the required items are all placed by the end of the day.
